MULVANE, Kan. – The drive for five is still alive and well for steer roper Scott Snedecor.

Snedecor, who arrived at the 2022 National Finals Steer Roping as the season leader remains in the top spot in the PRCA | RAM World Standings after the first five rounds Friday night.

Snedecor earned $19,816 on day one, thanks to placing in two of the five rounds at the Kansas Star.

“Today was great,” said Snedecor, 47. “I ran some good steers. There were a couple that I got around, and my horse worked outstanding. My roping feels sharp. I just go and try and tie them as fast as I can every time and I had a good night.”

Snedecor leads the world standings with $99,476, followed by reigning world champion Cole Patterson ($92,862), Jess Tierney ($82,324), J. Tom Fisher ($81,872) and Cody Lee ($77,142).

Snedecor is aboard Goose, 13, the 2022 Nutrena Steer Roping Horse of the Year presented by AQHA.

Snedecor, who won world championships in 2005, 2008, 2017-18, won Round 3 (9.4 seconds) and placed third in Round 2 (10.3 seconds).

“When you win money early, it’s always a lot of fun,” Snedecor said.

More importantly, Snedecor is leading the average with a 56.0-second time on five head. The average winner will earn $30,349. Snedecor along with Jake Long (58.5 seconds), Lee (61.7 seconds) and J. Tom Fisher (63.8) were the only cowboys to rope all five steers Friday.

Patterson did earn $16,313 on Friday, but he has ground to make up as he is 14th in the average with a 20.5-second time on two head.

“There’s five more to run (Saturday) and we are just going to keep our head down and keep running them,” Snedecor said. “The mindset is the same every time I show up here. I’m not going to let me beat myself. I’m just going to tie them down as fast as I can and let the chips fall where they fall.”

The Top 15 steer ropers in the PRCA are vying for a world championship and a share of the record $500,000 purse. The 2022 NFSR concludes at 7 p.m. (CT) on Saturday and will stream live online on the PRCA on The Cowboy Channel Plus App.

Vin Fisher Jr. won Round 2 with a 9.8-second time to win the Colby Goodwin Award. The Second Go-Round Award is given in honor of the late Goodwin, who passed away after being injured during the ninth round of 1999 NFSR.

This was the fifth time Fisher Jr. has won the Colby Goodwin Award as he was captured the honor in 2006, 2010, 2012 and 2020.

Fisher Jr. also won Round 4 with a 9.4-second time and his brother J. Tom won Round 5 in 9.6 seconds. Vin and J. Tom were the top two money earners after the first five rounds with $23,320 and $22,970, respectively.

“Winning rounds at the (NFSR) is hard and when you get that good one and it comes together you just have to go fast,” Vin said. “I always try and go a little faster at the Finals, which is why I have a lot of go-round wins and no average wins. But it is a relief to have a big first night and I’m glad I get to share the stage with my brother (as a round winner). Now that I have two no-times I guess we are going to gun for five rounds (Saturday) and have some fun.”
