Oklahoma man leads bull riding after third night of action

St. Paul, Ore. – The number eight bull rider in the PRCA world standings is taking home a piece of the money from St. Paul.

Trey Kimzey, Strong City, Okla., made a 90.5-point ride on the Sankey Rodeo Co. bull Tool Box to be the high score for the July 2 night of the rodeo.

The bull was just what he needed. “He’s not very big, but he tries real hard,” Kimzey said. “He’s an all-around great bull from Matt Scharping.”

It’s been a busy but unproductive Cowboy Christmas for Kimzey. Out of the five competitions he’s been to in Reno, Nev., Greeley, Colo., and Cody, Wyo., he’s only won two checks, both small ones.

With three more performances before the rodeo ends, Kimzey’s lead isn’t secure. His score is likely to hold for a check, and hopefully the championship at the Nation’s Greatest Fourth of July rodeo.

This is the best rodeo season the twenty-three-year-old cowboy has had. In Kimzey’s rookie year, 2019, he qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but hasn’t made it since then.

“I made the (National) Finals my rookie year, which was a great blessing, but I got stagnant, and sat in one spot and never had any fire. Not making the Finals two years in a row definitely lights a fire.”

In 2019, Kimzey finished fifteenth in the world standings.

The St. Paul Rodeo will set a record this year in its payout, disbursing approximately $428,000 to the winning cowboys and cowgirls. The old record was set in 2019, with a payout of $375,000. This year the rodeo increased its purse money to $35,550 per event this year. A large purse increases the number of and quality of contestants, who are independent contractors who choose what rodeos at which to compete.

Other high scores and fast times from slack and the third performance of the St. Paul Rodeo are bareback rider R.C. Landingham, Hat Creek, Calif. (85.5 points) and saddle bronc rider Kole Ashbacher, Arrowwood, Alb. (85.5 points).

In the timed events, first and second round leader are as follows: tie-down ropers Kass Kayser, Ellensburg, Wash. (9.3 seconds in the first round) and Trevor Hale, Perryton, Texas (8.9 seconds in the second round); steer wrestlers Cody Devers, Balko, Okla. (4.2 seconds in the first round) and Tanner Milan, Cochrane, Alb. (3.8 seconds in the second round); and team ropers Jeff Flenniken, Caldwell, Idaho and Jake Minor, Ellensburg, Wash. (6.0 seconds in the first round) and Jason Stewart, Pendleton, Ore. and BJ Campbell, Aguila, Ariz. (6.4 seconds in the second round.)

In the barrel racing, Homedale, Idaho’s Abby Sutfin had the fast time of the night with a 17.57 second run.

The St. Paul Rodeo continues on July 3 with an evening performance at 7:30 pm and two performances on July 4: a 1:30 pm matinee and a 7:30 pm performance.
