PRCA Standings Shuffle: Slade Wood Moves into Steer Roping Top 15

Slade Wood grew up around steer roping, watching his father, Neal, a four-time National Finals Steer Roping qualifier, compete on the sport’s biggest stage.

Now a rookie, Slade is making his own way in the ProRodeo ranks, climbing up 15 spots in one week. He not only leads the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings in steer roping, but after his success last week, he’s sitting sixth in the world standings with $32,628.

“I was lucky enough to have one of the best weeks I’ve had so far in my career,” said Wood, 18. “I got off to a great start by winning the first round in Cheyenne (Wyo.), then went to Deadwood (S.D.) and won some money there. I wrapped up the week (Aug. 1) by finishing second back in Cheyenne. That really helped me make the jump this week.”

Getting inside the Top 15 wasn’t easy for Wood. He admits the beginning of the season was a challenge for him, especially coming straight out of high school.

“It started out really rough this year, it even had me second guessing if I should have gotten my card out of high school,” Wood said. “But ever since about the Fourth of July it’s turned around and been pretty good for me, and it seems like it just keeps getting easier.”

Wood will look to accomplish his goal and become one of the youngest cowboys to ever qualify for the NFSR in November.
