Sterling Crawley Wins Tremonton Bronc Riding

TREMONTON, Utah – Saddle bronc rider Sterling Crawley struck gold at the Golden Spike PRCA Bronc Riding Classic with a 90-point ride in Tremonton, Utah, Aug. 22.

Like an Xtreme Bulls event, the Golden Spike PRCA Bronc Riding Classic was a one-event competition and was stacked. Nineteen of the top 20 competitors in the PRCA | RAM World Standings made the trip to Tremonton. The stock was also top notch.

“They pretty well screen the best horses they can get there, and it was pretty awesome,” Crawley said. “You have the best guys and the best horses there, and in Tremonton everyone loves bronc riding and rodeo so much.”

Tremonton’s formula worked, as everyone who placed scored 86.5 points or higher.

“It was awesome, it’s great that there’s an event like that now,” Crawley said. “I would think it would grow for next year with the success they had there. The crowd and committee were pleased with how it went, and the cowboys were impressed with the stock.”

Crawley won $3,983 with his 90-point ride on Big Bend Rodeo’s Majorhuckleberry. This wasn’t Crawley’s first encounter with Majorhuckleberry, having ridden him at the Horse Heaven Round-Up in Kennewick, Wash., in 2016.

“I’d had him before in Kennewick and it didn’t go so great, but he was great yesterday and stayed under himself,” Crawley said. “He’s a really good horse, a big horse and kind of strong, and he is flashy. If you do your job right he can let you get a bunch of points. I’m a longer-legged bronc rider, and he sure enough feels good in the saddle.”

Before winning Tremonton, Crawley was ninth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $89,446.

“I’d like to break my regular season record so far and get everything set and try to win as much as I can between now and then,” Crawley said.

The younger of the famed Crawley brothers, the 27-year-old, from Ennis, Texas, has qualified four times for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2012-13, 2016-17).

“I’d like for it to be routine,” Crawley laughed. “You figure it out more mentally as far as staying the course and doing your job, and there are ups and downs and to not let the downs stick around too long.”

Tremonton isn’t Crawley’s only win for the 2018 season. He also won the Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede, Ogden (Utah) Pioneer Days, the Brighton Field Days Festival & Rodeo in Okeechobee, Fla., and the Crockett (Texas) Lions Club PRCA Rodeo.
