Trey Young Captures Tie-Down Title at RAM Badlands Circuit Finals

Tie-down roper Trey Young knew what it was going to take to come into Minot, N.D., and walk away with a RAM Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo title.

He executed that plan to perfection on Oct. 10. The Dupree, S.D., cowboy, had the lead in the average coming into the final go-round and delivered an 8.8-second run to not only win the three-head average in 27.4 seconds, but also took home the RAM Badlands Circuit year-end title.

“Coming into these deals you have to be sharp in that first round and try to build on it from there,” said Young, 30. “I came in and drew three really good calves and made sure I was good on the barrier all weekend long and rope everything around the neck. My horse worked really well, and it all fell together right for me in Minot this week.”

The win qualifies Young for his fourth National Circuit Finals Rodeo. He finished second in the average a year ago in Kissimmee, Fla. He said this victory will point his 2022 ProRodeo season in the right direction.

“Circuit rodeos and the Circuit Finals are great for guys because each circuit is counting towards those world standings and it kind of gives a guy a jumpstart on the next year,” Young said.

Last season Young finished 37th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, which was the highest finish of his seven-year ProRodeo career. He said while he would love to chase the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo dream, he’s more of a circuit guy at this point in his career.

“I’m kind of the quintessential circuit guy I guess you could say, I don’t ever venture off too much,” Young said. “I went out a little bit this year and tried them on for a while. But I’d rather take it easy and stay closer to home.”

Those few months out on the road showed him just how talented the sport of ProRodeo is.

“It kind of opens your eyes to a different level of competition, it showed me just how consistent and sharp those guys are,” he said. “You get out there amongst the top guys in the world you have to draw good and take advantage of that opportunity or you won’t win a thing. It just opens your eyes to how good the Top 15 or 20 guys in the world are.”

Other winners at the rodeo were bareback rider Ty Breuer (250 points on three head); steer wrestler Riley Reiss (12.2 seconds on three head); team ropers Cameron Irwin/Cash Hetzel (15.2 seconds on three head); saddle bronc rider Ty Manke (242 points on three head); breakaway roper Sawyer Gilbert (8.7 seconds on three head); barrel racer Amanda Welsh (40.21 seconds on three runs); and bull rider Riggin Shippy (165 points on two head).
