Weekly Recap: Jacobs Crawley Posts 85.5-Point Ride

Saddle bronc rider Jacobs Crawley knows what it takes to win a world title and to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, which he’s done 10 years in a row.

Crawley, who won a world championship in 2015, took a small step in making the NFR for the 11th consecutive year when he won the Crockett (Texas) Lions Club PRCA Rodeo with an 85.5-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Slappin Leather May 8 to earn $1,045.

That was the highest-scored saddle bronc ride of the week of May 3-9. It also helped Crawley move up to 21st in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

“Probably the first time I was on that horse was 11 years ago,” said Crawley, 32. “He’s been around forever, and I’ve had him probably five times over the course of my career and we’ve gotten along each time. I had another horse fall with me, and he (Slappin Leather) was the re-ride. It was a really nice ride. That’s the kind of horse bronc riders usually eat up. He’s flashy. He doesn’t have much power, but he gives you the opportunity to show off and have fun.”

This was Crawley’s third career win in Crockett, Texas, also winning in 2009 and 2014.

“Everything is starting to get rolling busy,” Crawley said. “We have a few more weeks of good Texas rodeos and there are one or two more in California, and then we will be hitting it full speed in June and July. We’ll see how everything shakes out, and we’ll go on through August and September.”

Crawley said looking at the PRCA schedule with numerous options is a welcome sight.

“It is so great, it really is,” he said. “That’s the conversation the guys are having behind the chutes and in the locker rooms. It is a relief, but it’s even more than that. It’s an excitement because it is so nice to go from one rodeo then also have another rodeo and potentially another rodeo instead of just one, maybe two and then you’re a couple of weeks off because of the uncertainty of last year. The guys are all excited, me included.

“It’s just opportunity, that’s what it boils down to. This year it looks like it is going to be much closer to the typical (season). So, the guys will be a little bit spread out and there will be more good horses around. It’ll be nice getting back to what guys are used to.”

In addition to Crawley, other contestants who had top rides and times for the week of May 3-9 are listed below.
