WHERE THINGS STAND HEADING INTO VELOCITY FINALS: Last weekend, the premier series regular season wrapped up in Lincoln, Nebraska.

2020 Rookie of the Year and World Finals event winner Boudreaux Campbell won his third event of the season in Lincoln, going 3-for-3, including a 91-point ride on Bubba G in the championship round.

The 90-point ride was Campbell’s sixth of the season, tied for fourth-most of any rider on tour, and earned him his seventh round win, the fifth most of all competitors on the premier series.

His performance in Lincoln also allowed him to crack the Top 5 in the world standings heading into World Finals.

When it comes to the world title contenders, world No. 2 Kaique Pacheco and No. 3 Cooper Davis both managed to take advantage of the absence of world No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme, each delivering a Top-10 finish.

Davis placed sixth to move to within 749 points of Leme, while Pacheco was eighth and shrank Leme’s lead to 607 points. Both could have done more damage but were shut out in the championship round.

Leme is still sidelined as he suffered a Grade 2 sprain of his right groin before a setback in the practice pen extended the injury into a core muscle strain.

But with such a large lead in the world standings, the world title is still Leme’s to lose.

In order for another rider to be a realistic threat to win the world title, he would likely have to be within 700-800 points of Leme. Right now, only Pacheco and Davis are within that range. No. 4 Joao Ricardo Vieira is 1,044 points back.

Leme will not be competing at the Velocity Finals as he continues to rehab his injury, and Davis has chosen to sit out as well. Pacheco, however, will be at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center looking to gain ground on the world No. 1 ranking.

PWVT standings leader Michael Lane is out with a broken thumb, so No. 2 Manoelito de Souza Jr. leads the pack of standings qualifiers looking to win the Velocity Tour title.

LAST YEAR AT THE VELOCITY FINALS: Last year, the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals were in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for the first time, and Mason Taylor worked his magic.

In April of 2019, Taylor won his first Unleash The Beast event in Sioux Falls. A year and a half later, he returned to go 2-for-3 at the Velocity Finals, winning Round 1 and the championship round to take the event victory.

The performance earned him 90 world points, moving him to No. 9 in the world standings ahead of the World Finals.

“I just come here to have fun,” said Taylor after winning the 2020 PWVT Championship. “It’s ridiculous how much money we can win riding bulls now. I want to be a rich cowboy, so I just gotta keep my hand shut.”

Uncharacteristically, world No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme went 0-for-2 and actually lost ground in the world title race as No. 2 Joao Ricardo Vieira finished in a tie for third, cutting Leme’s lead to 424.59 points.

Ultimately, though, Leme would go on to clinch the world title before the last day of competition at the World Finals.

What will the action at the Velocity Finals bring this year? Tune into RidePass on Pluto TV to find out!
