World Finals Rewind: Top 5 Rides From Round 6 of the 2008 PBR World Finals

By: Darci Miller

PUEBLO, Colo. – In 2005, 2006 and 2007, Guilherme Marchi entered the PBR World Finals with world title aspirations and left with heartbreak, finishing ranked No. 2 in the world standings in three consecutive seasons.

In 2008, Marchi was finally able to break through.

The 2019 Ring of Honor inductee won his long-awaited World Championship in 2008, and didn’t even need the last two rounds of the World Finals to do so. He clinched the world title in Round 6, riding Rewind for 87.5 points.

But, Round 6 was an absolute bull riding clinic – including four 90-point rides – and Marchi’s ride tied him for 13th place in the round.

Watch all the action of Round 6 on the PBR’s Facebook page starting at 4 p.m. ET, and read on to relive the Top 5 rides.

1. Justin McBride – 91.75 points on Scene of the Crash

Two-time World Champion Justin McBride called it a career after the 2008 World Finals, going 5-for-8 for sixth place overall in the final event of his illustrious career. McBride won Round 6 with 91.75 points aboard Scene of the Crash, who he’d ridden for a $200,000 bounty in 2007, before also winning Round 7 with a 93.75-point ride on Pearl Snap.

2. Chris Shivers – 91 points on Devil’s Night

Another two-time World Champion threw down in Round 6, with Chris Shivers taking second place in the round with a 91-point ride on Devil’s Night. Shivers finished fourth overall at the 2008 World Finals, going 6-for-8 with four 90-point rides. It’s a fitting performance for Shivers, who holds the all-time PBR record for 90-point rides with 94.

T3. Robson Palermo – 90.5 points on Hot Stuff

Robson Palermo is the only three-time World Finals event winner in PBR history, and the only back-to-back World Finals event winner in PBR history. But before his back-to-back wins came 2008, when Palermo won his first World Finals title with a 7-for-8 performance. His 90.5-point ride on Hot Stuff in Round 6 improved him to 5-for-6, and he would go on to beat Marchi in the average by a scant 2.75 points.

T3. Reese Cates – 90.5 points on Team Equine’s Evil Forces

Five-time World Finals qualifier Reese Cates finished fifth overall at the 2008 World Finals, going 6-for-8, including a 90.5-point ride on Team Equine’s Evil Forces in Round 6. Cates would go on to win the 2008 Rookie of the Year title when the honor was based on money earned with $176,590.

T5. Valdiron de Oliveira – 89.75 points on Sports Machine

Valdiron de Oliveira was a perennial world title contender from 2008-2012, ultimately finishing 2008 No. 3 in the world standings. He went 5-for-8 at the World Finals, including an 89.75-point ride on Sports Machine in Round 6, and would go on to rack up 429 rides on the premier series, the fourth-most in PBR history.

T5. Brian Canter – 89.75 points on Zorro

Brian Canter went 3-for-7 at the 2008 World Finals, tying for fifth place in Round 6 with 89.75 points aboard Zorro. Canter qualified for the World Finals four times in his career, and finished 2008 ranked No. 25 in the world standings.
