Young Gun Petri Captures Career-First Unleash The Beast Victory in Manchester, New Hampshire

By: Kacie Albert

MANCHESTER, N.H. – As the penultimate regular-season PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast event of 2021 wound to a close Saturday night in Manchester, New Hampshire, young gun Jesse Petri (Dublin, Texas) reached a critical career milestone. Delivering a near-perfect 2-for-3 showing inside SNHU Arena, Petri captured his career-first PBR elite tour event win, victorious at the PBR Monster Energy Invitational.

Petri had brought the electric Granite State crowd to its feet in the opening round of competition on Friday night, delivering the second-best score behind round winner Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil). He reached the requisite 8 atop Dr. Campbell (Nancy Haverty/Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) for 89 points.

In the first fan-attended event inside SNHU Arena in more than 600 days, Petri could not continue his momentum in Round 2, brought down by The Undertaker (Cornwell Bucking Bulls/Riley Bucking Bulls) in a quick 3.1 seconds.

However, the 23-year-old’s Round 1 score was enough to maintain his second-place position on the event leaderboard, allowing him the opportunity to select WSM’s Foghorn Leghorn (WSM’s Auctioneers/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in the championship round bull draft.

Needing to deliver a score, Petri rose to the occasion, covering the powerful bovine athlete for a championship round-winning 87.5 points.

For his efforts, Petri earned a check for $27,491.39 and a crucial 126 world points. He surged six positions in the world standings, rising from No. 19 to No. 13 as he readies to make his first appearance at the PBR World Finals Nov. 3-7 in Las Vegas at T-Mobile Arena.

Petri also made significant moves in the race for the 2021 PBR Rookie of the Year honor. He is now No. 3 in the standings amongst first-year elite tour riders, 64.92 points behind No. 1 contender Junior Patrik Souza (Sonora, Brazil), who is No. 10 in the world.

The race for the 2021 PBR World Championship continued to intensify as 2018 PBR World Champion and current world No. 2 Pacheco finished second to inch within 635 points of No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil), who remains sidelined by injury.

Pacheco was unrivaled in Round 1, registering his sixth 90-point ride and ninth round win of the season when he delivered a monstrous 91-point ride atop Dirty Sancho (Blake Sharp/Koe Wetzel/High Voltage Cattle).

The “Ice Man” remained perfect in Round 2 Saturday evening when he covered re-ride opponent The Sauce Too (Blake Sharp/Henry Wilson) for 84.5 points.

With the first pick in the championship round draft, Pacheco selected Mike’s Motive (Blake Sharp/High Voltage Cattle/American Spirits/Koe Wetzel).

While the bovine athlete was a new opponent for Pacheco, the stoic Brazilian had witnessed the bull propel Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) to the event win this past May in Jacksonville, Florida, when the Texan reached the whistle for a 91.75-point score.

As the chute gate burst open, Pacheco was unseated and sent to the dirt in an uncharacteristic 3.29 seconds.

While he was unable to secure his sixth event win of the year, the silver finish netted Pacheco a much-needed 91.5 world points, along with a check for $14,224.17.

Third was Eli Vastbinder (Statesville, North Carolina), earning $15,094.02 and 71 world points.

Vastbinder first rode Skeeter Peter (Dakota Rodeo/Mark Baker/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) for 86.5 points but could not advance to the final round with two scores on the board when he was brought down by Henry (Blake Sharp) in 2.63 seconds in the second round.

Rebounding from his Round 2 buckoff, Vastbinder led the crowd to erupt in raucous cheer in the championship round when he dominated Red Bones (Kathy Boone/Joe Beaver/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) for 87.25 points.

Vastbinder is now ranked No. 17 in the world, up five positions after traveling to the PBR Monster Energy Invitational ranked No. 22.

Derek Kolbaba (Walla Walla, Washington) parlayed a Round 2 win into a fourth-place finish in the overall event.

Going 1-for-3, Kolbaba surged into the Top 5 of the event leaderboard when he made the 8 atop Codigo (Fabulous IV Ranch/Josh & Dalton Walling) for 88.5 points in the second round.

The Washington cowboy left SNHU Arena having earned 49 world points. He remained No. 8 in the world and now trails No. 1 Leme by 1,430 points.

Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Conner Halverson (Gordon, Nebraska), collecting 35 world points.

Halverson’s lone qualified ride in New Hampshire was registered in Round 2 when he went the distance aboard Skeeter Peter for 88 points.

On the bubble of reaching the 2021 PBR World Finals, Halverson rose from No. 35 to No. 33 in the standings.

In the bull pen, Off Campus (Dakota Rodeo/Brian & Ashley Pintar/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) was the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event. The fierce animal athlete was marked an event-best 45.5 points in the championship round when he sent Kolbaba to the dirt in 2.48 seconds.

The PBR Unleash the Beast will next travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, and Pinnacle Bank Arena for the final regular-season event of 2021, the PBR Cooper Tires Invitational. The event will be on Saturday, October 23 at 6:45 p.m. CDT and Sunday, October 24 at 1:45 p.m. CDT.
