Tie-Down Ropers Step Up to the Plate at Caldwell Night Rodeo
CALDWELL, Idaho — The tie-down roping at the Caldwell Night Rodeo is becoming very interesting as contestants are fighting for a spot at the championship finals or a second round pay check.
Thursday night’s performance was a clear example of that as two cowboys moved into the top 12 in the standings to be back for the finals on Saturday and one put himself in position to get a check in the second round.
The fast time of the night went to Cody Quaney from Cheney, Kan. He got to make the victory lap in front of the fans after stopping the clock in 7.8 seconds. He had a no time in the first round of competition, so his run here Thursday was his only opportunity to get a check. Quaney is currently 29th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings.
With just six weeks left in the regular season, he is an unlikely candidate for this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). He is now tied for second in the round with Stetson Vest of Childress, Texas. He is likely to get a check and every dollar he wins counts.
For Quaney and many other competitors here, the money is important for their 2016 season. If they finish this year high enough in the standings it will qualify them for the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver in January and the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo in February where entries are limited.
On the other side of the battle is Tuf Cooper, from Decatur, Texas, who is hoping to go back to the NFR and defend his 2014 world championship. Cooper roped and tied his calf in 10.5 seconds on Thursday night, not fast enough to get a check in the round, but it does put him in a tie for eighth place overall. Cooper has already won over $2,000 here and will have a chance to add to that in the overall (average) standings.
Cooper leads the world standings with $87,437. He is $7,473 ahead of Aubrey, Texas, resident Timber Moore. Again, every dollar Cooper wins is important as he wants to maintain that number one spot through the final performance at the NFR on December 12th.
There is a new leader in the bull riding. Aaron Pass from Dallas, Texas, had an outstanding ride on Powder River Rodeo’s 16X to score 88 points. Pass is just outside of the top 15 who qualify for the NFR at 16th. The bull riding here is one round of competition, so with two performances left, his lead could be in jeopardy. However, he is likely to get a good check and could move up in the standings to make the trip to Las Vegas to compete for a second time.
Thursday night’s performance benefitted Power of Pink where money is raised to fund mammograms for local women. This year’s efforts raised nearly $45,000, a new record for the Caldwell Night Rodeo.
Friday night’s rodeo is Wrangler Patriot night. Fans are encouraged to wear red white and blue. There will be special activities that honor veterans and fund raising efforts for local military charities. Junior rodeo action begins at 6:30 followed by the professional Rodeo at 8 p.m.
