PRCA Standings Shuffle: 22 Move Up in Top 15

Halfway through March, Reno Gonzales has already won more this season than ever before as a team roping heeler.

Tie-down roping has traditionally been the 27-year-old cowboy’s strong point. In 2017, he won the Southeastern Circuit year-end title and the RAM Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo in the event. Gonzales, who was a rookie in 2014, had his best season as a tie-down roper in 2018 when he collected $27,743.

Team roping has been a different story.

Gonzales added team roping to the mix in 2015, and his best season was capped at $3,305 in 2018.

Now the tide has changed, and the Scott, La., cowboy is making waves with team roping header Justin Yost.

From March 15-21, Gonzales had the biggest jump of all ProRodeo athletes within the Top 15 of their respective events. Gonzales moved up 21 spots in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, from 34th to 13th, thanks to a $4,448, double-check weekend.

Yost and Gonzales won the Southeastern Pro Rodeo in Ocala, Fla., to earn $1,109 and placed fourth at the Southeastern Livestock Exposition & Rodeo in Montgomery, Ala., to take home $3,339. Both competitions concluded March 20 and helped Gonzales put $8,954 next to his name for heeling on the season.

With more major rodeos on the horizon, big jumps such as Gonzales’ are sure to happen again. The 22 cowboys who advanced within the Top 15 of their respective events March 15-21 are listed below.

• Saddle bronc rider Mitch Pollock moved from 19th and is $591 away from breaking into the Top 15.
• Tie-down roper Marcos Costa moved from 19th and is $29 away from breaking into the Top 15.
