Steer Roping World Standings Jammed at Top

Usually this late in the season there’s some separation between the top three steer ropers in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

Not this year.

As of Aug. 6, four-time world champion Scott Snedecor was the leader in the world standings with $38,434, just $329 in front of Cole Patterson. Meanwhile, reigning and seven-time steer roping world champ Trevor Brazile is third, another $295 behind.

The cancellation of rodeos because of the COVID-19 pandemic has played a part in the logjam at the top of the standings, but it’s something Snedecor is embracing.

“For the longest time in steer roping it always seemed like you had the one guy at the top (with a big lead),” said Snedecor, who won world championships in 2005, 2008 and 2017-18. “Later on, it seemed like the top two guys in the standings would be fairly close. We’ve had some of the big rodeos get canceled that probably would have caused more separation in the standings, but now things are very interesting and fun because things are so close.”

Snedecor, Patterson and Brazile are competing in a stand-alone PRCA steer roping event in Yuma, Colo., at 5 p.m. today.

“This season definitely has been different,” said Patterson, the son of four-time steer roping world champion Rocky Patterson. “If there’s a bright spot to this year, it should be good watching the whole year, especially at the (Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping) because all 15 guys who make the NFSR will have a good chance to win the world.”

The 2020 Clem McSpadden NFSR is scheduled for Nov. 6-7 at the Kansas Star in Mulvane.

“I’ve been kind of picking and choosing what rodeos I’ve gone to,” Brazile said. “Then, with the pandemic I was able to stay in the hunt in the standings. My goal is to get to the NFSR and be at least within $10,000 of the leader. It will be fun to go to the NFSR and have another chance at a world championship.”

Snedecor won his first world championship in 2005 by $1.67 over 18-time world champion Guy Allen. That’s the closest world title race in any single event in PRCA history.

“It was unbelievable,” Snedecor said. “The way things are shaping up in the standings this season it’s going to be a lot of fun at the NFSR because a lot of guys are going to be in the mix for the world championship. It’s going to come down to who performs best that weekend because there’s so much money to be won at the NFSR.”
