Fun Facts Colten: Not many contestants have a personal relationship with a surgeon – but Colten does and much of his success is because of Dr. Jason Stoneback with UCHealth and University of Colorado School of Medicine. Colton dislocated his elbow before he hit double digits. Three years later, when he was in sixth grade, they discovered it hadn’t healed right and that the elbow had actually been fractured. They found Dr. Stoneback who harvested a piece of Colten’s pelvis and used it to restore his elbow. Then when Colten was 16, a practice bull stepped on his leg and broke his tibia. Surgery to fix that didn’t work and Dr. Stoneback came to the rescue again. Dr. Stoneback is a volunteer for the Justin Sportsmedicine Team and former rodeo competitor too. He has been behind the chutes with Colten and even pulled his bull rope. That return to health is seeing Colten, a fourth-generation rodeo contestant, compete on rodeo’s biggest stage. He is in a fight for the rookie of the year title as well as a gold buckle.
