Pedone Remains Leader Heading Into Final Round in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO — With just the wildcard round left before the final round action on Saturday in San Antonio, Ryann Pedone of Sunset, Texas, continues to lead the way in total money won thus far with $11,500 following three runs in bracket competition and two more in the semifinal round.

During the first round of semifinal two rodeo officials determined that conditions for the women’s barrel race were unfavorable, so they stopped the competition giving the contestants the option to rerun the following morning, Feb. 20. Jill Wilson of Snyder, Texas, was one of those competitors and she took advantage to stop the clock in 13.82 seconds to win the round and added $5,000 to her San Antonio earnings. Pedone was right on her heels stopping the clock in 13.86 seconds to finish second and add $4,000. Pedone had a clean sweep in her bracket so was coming into the semifinals with the largest sum of money with $7,500.

The second round of semifinal 2 was on Thursday evening, Feb. 20, and two-time world champion Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi continued to ride her wave of momentum after winning the San Angelo Rodeo last weekend. Pozzi Tonozzi stopped the clock in 13.91 seconds to add another $5,000 to her earnings. She enters the finals with $10,000, just behind Pedone.

The first semifinal group kicked things off this week with Wrangler NFR qualifier Kathy Grimes taking the victory lap on Monday with a time of 14.05 seconds. She was followed closely by the last two WPRA Rookies of the Year with Jimmie Smith second in a time of 14.11 and Carly Taylor third with a 14.15-second run. The second round of the first semifinal saw Canadian Brooke Wills take the victory lap in the Lone Star State with a 13.94-second run. Grimes, Brittney Barnett and Taylor were the top winners out of semifinal one with $8,500 each in earnings thus far in San Antonio.

A new element for the 2020 edition is the Wildcard round that will take place on Friday, Feb. 21 that will feature the top 10 times on two runs from a qualifier that was held Feb 10 and 11. Some of the names slated to compete in the Wildcard round include Brittany Diaz, Kelly Bruner, and Tiany Schuster. The single fastest time in the Wildcard round will be the 11th contestant in the San Antonio Rodeo Finals.
