Hanchey Wins First Round of Roping at Fort Worth’s World’s Original Indoor Rodeo®

by Johna Cravens
for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas — Shane Hanchey is having a pretty good week. The Sulphur, Louisiana, cowboy officially earned nearly $6,600 for the fastest time in the first round of tie-down roping at the 2017 World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® Saturday night.

The 2013 World Champion was the only one of more than 190 ropers to post a time of under eight seconds. He roped on Wednesday morning, but the first round of competition did not end until Saturday night.

Hanchey then traveled to Denver where he tied the arena record of 6.9 seconds at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo on Thursday. That was good enough for second in the first round and a paycheck of more than $3,352. He roped a second calf there on Friday and leads the overall standings in Denver with a total of 15.6 on two. He’ll rope in the championship round there on Sunday. He won’t compete in the second round here until Saturday, January 27.

Only four ropers have competed in the second round so far and Decatur’s Clif Cooper, older brother of 2017 World Champion All-Around Cowboy Tuf Cooper, has the overall lead with 18.1 on two runs. He tied for fifth in the first round.

Saturday night was the night of champion saddle bronc riders with three former world champions in the field. Two-time world champion Jacobs Crawley of Boerne took the lead overall and the second-round lead with an 86.5 score on Rafter G Rodeo’s Orange Crush.

His fellow titlists – New Mexico’s Taos Muncy and Alberta’s Zeke Thurston did not fare as well. Rafter G’s Snidely Whiplash sent Muncy flying about halfway through the ride. Thurston drew Rafter G’s famous bucking horse Assault. The dun has made a name for himself as one of the best bareback broncs in rodeo, carrying Richmond Champion to a $1 million win at the inaugural The American rodeo at AT&T Stadium in Arlington and being selected several times for the National Finals Rodeo. Saturday night was his first time in the saddle bronc riding and he gave Thurston more than he could handle.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues its 100th birthday with performances at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Fort Worth’s historic Will Rogers Coliseum.
