Red Bluff Crowns Champions

red bluff Ryan Watkins by hubbell red bluff 14Bareback rider doesn’t let past world titles influence him; California bull rider gets revenge on bull

Red Bluff, Calif. (April 20, 2014) – With beautiful skies overhead and full grandstands, champions for the 93rd annual Red Bluff Round-Up were crowned on Sunday afternoon.

In the bareback riding, Kaycee Feild was delighted to ride in Red Bluff. The reigning Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association world champion (for the third consecutive year) rode his horse for 88 points and the Red Bluff title. It was hard for him to get excited to leave his house in Payson, Utah, but he was in a great mood when he got to the Round-Up. “I left the house at 3:30 this morning, kind of dreading leaving, but you get to Red Bluff and this environment, and everybody around you, the horses and everything, and your attitude changes really quick.”

He’s currently sitting second in the world standings, but doesn’t let his past three world titles influence how he rides. “I just have to not necessarily forget about my past and my accomplishments, but you have to put them to the side and go at it every year like it’s your first year, like you’re craving it and you want it.” His dad, Lewis Feild, is a five-time world champion bareback rider, and Kaycee keeps that in mind. “I can’t talk crap on him yet,” he joked. “But when I win two more (world titles), he’s gonna get an earful.”

It’s harder to leave the house now than it used to be for the 27 year old cowboy. He and his wife have a young daughter, and it’s changed his perspective. “At 3:30 this morning, I go to say goodbye, and she’s sleeping, and you leave the house to get to a rodeo with a whole different meaning than it used to have when I was a young punk.”

But being in Red Bluff helps. “We’ve been (competing) indoors all winter long, and this is the first (big) rodeo outdoors, and we get on the best stock here. It changes your whole attitude. It’s just an honor to be here and win this rodeo. It’s a special rodeo to win.”

In the bull riding, a home-state cowboy walked away with the gold buckle. Dylan Vick, Escalon, Calif. scored 87 points on the bull named Buckmaster from Western Rodeos. It was his second meeting with the bull, who had bucked him off at the California Circuit Finals Rodeo last year, and Vick was ready for him. “He started to the left, went back to the right, and when he went to the right last time (at the circuit finals), he bucked me off. This time, I didn’t get too comfortable either way. I just kept riding like I didn’t know what was going to happen, which is how you’re supposed to ride.”

His traveling partner is Cody Campbell, Summerville, Ore. who was last year’s Red Bluff champion but got bucked off today. Cody also won the Logandale, Nev. rodeo last year, which Dylan won last week. Cody won a few other California rodeos last year, so Dylan jokes that he’s following in Cody’s footsteps. “I asked him today, what other California rodeos did you win? What titles do I have to reclaim for you?”

Other Red Bluff champions include steer wrestler Ty Erickson, Helena, Mont. (23.5 seconds on four head), saddle bronc rider Tyler Corrington, Hastings, Minn. (84), tie-down roper Ryan Watkins, Bluff Dale, Texas (35.7 seconds on four head), team ropers Kaleb Driggers, Albany, Ga., and Patrick Smith, Lipan, Texas, who tied with Cory Kidd, V., Statesville, N.C. and Adam Plyler, Pageland, S.C. (24.4 seconds on four head), and barrel racer Carlee Pierce, Stephenville, Texas (34.42 seconds on two runs.)

The Sunday performance was the rodeo’s annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign. A Polaris Ranger utility vehicle was auctioned off and sold to Jan Sutherland, owner of the Red Bluff and regional Taco Bell locations. The monies raised go to breast cancer treatment at the St. Elizabeth Imaging Center.

Next year’s Red Bluff Round-Up will be held 17-19, 2015. For more information on the rodeo, visit RedBluffRoundup.com.
