Gaona and partner Trevor Nowlin took the round one win at the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo in April to bring home $4,174. That payday was crucial on his way to being named the Resistol Rookie Team Roping Header of the Year. He wrapped up the 2021 season earning $26,872. Biggest moment of the 2021 season?
John: I think it has to be my win in Casper, (Wyo.), I’ll always remember my first pro win and it definitely took a little weight off my shoulders.
When did you realize you could win Rookie of the Year?
John: This is my first year rodeoing full time, so I didn’t really know if it was possible. But I think after I won Casper, (Wyo.) it started to set in that I could do it.
