Team Roping Leaderboard Sees Big Changes at Fort Worth Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas — Clay Smith and Paul Eaves are continuing their winning ways at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.

They started roping together less than a year ago and qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) last December where they each earned nearly $45,000. Momentum has been on their side. Just last week, they won the championship and together got checks for over $14,000 at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver.

On Sunday afternoon, with Smith from Broken Bow, Okla., doing the heading and Eaves, from Lonedell, Mo., heeling, they stopped the clock in 3.9 seconds. This is the fastest run at the rodeo so far. Not only did it take the lead in the second round, it put them in command of the overall standings. It also tied the arena record set by Clay Tryan and Patrick Smith in 2007.

Smith and Eaves have a total time of 9.4 seconds on two runs. Eaves is currently second in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings and Smith is in third. While it is still early in the season, winning at the big winter rodeos (Denver, Fort Worth and San Antonio) can set a contestant up for an NFR qualification and the opportunity to compete for a world title.

They are nearly assured a high spot coming back for the championship finals and if they rope well enough to earn the title it will be the second for Eaves. In 2010, he did the heeling for Joel Bach who was living nearby in Parker County at the time. It would be the biggest rodeo title won by Smith, and Eaves would go down in the record books as a two-time winner.

The team ropers in second and third places in the overall standings were actually competing in the same performances as Smith and Eaves. Former world champion header Chad Masters from Cedar Hill, Tenn., and his partner Travis Graves from Jay, Okla., have a total time of 9.8 seconds. The new pairing of Luke Brown from Stephenville, Texas, and Jake Long from Coffeyville, Kan., are third with 9.9.

There is a new overall leader in steer wrestling after Brother Loud from Kaufman, Texas, stopped the clock in 5.2 seconds. He tied for fifth place in the first round with a time of 4.4. That earned him nearly $2,500. Now, he has a total of 9.6 seconds on two and is in contention for the title.

Trent Jacobsen from Irwin, Idaho, now has the highest marked bull ride of the rodeo so far. He rode Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Amplified Howdy for 88 points. Clayton Savage, from Yoder, Wyo., was right behind him with an 87.5-point ride on another bull from Pickett’s named Relentless. They were the only two successful bull riders on Sunday night and now lead the first round. They will have their second round competition at Monday’s matinee performance.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo continues Monday with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m. in Fort Worth’s historic Will Rogers Coliseum.
