2015 St. Paul Rodeo Champions Crowned

Wins boost cowboys in world rankings, pad pocketbooks and outfit belts with new trophy buckles

St. Paul, Ore. – The 80th annual St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo wrapped up after five performances and out of 500-plus cowboy and cowgirl competitors, nine went home with championship gold buckles.

It’s the second time for Jessy Davis to win a St. Paul buckle. The Power, Montana cowboy won the title in 2008, and again this year, with the same score both times: 87 points. This year it was aboard the Korkow Rodeos horse Foxy Lady that he made his winning ride.

Davis is a veteran in the pro rodeo world, having competed for over ten years and having qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the world championship of pro rodeo, six of those years. Before Cowboy Christmas started, one of the busiest weeks in the rodeo world, Davis was ranked twenty-first in the standings, six holes out of the top fifteen who qualify for the Wrangler NFR.

His winning check of $10,000 should leapfrog him to the top fifteen. And as of Saturday night, he was placing in Oakley, Calif. and West Jordan, Utah. If his scores hold at those rodeos, he’ll go even higher in the rankings.

The first St. Paul Rodeo buckle Davis won sits in his trophy case at home, and it’s one of the trophies that visitors notice when they look at his mementos. “They give great buckles,” Davis said. “They’re awesome buckles. St. Paul (rodeo) has been around forever, and it’s one of those deals, you just like looking at (the buckle.)”

The crowd roared as Davis made a victory lap around the arena, and loved it. “I’m glad they’re so into rodeo,” he said.

Five-time world champion steer wrestler left St. Paul as champ, with a time of 8.8 seconds on two head.

He’s fifth in the world standings, headed to his fourteenth Wrangler NFR, even though an injury this spring sidelined him temporarily. “The year started off good,” he said, “then I got hurt at Logandale” (Nev.) Branquinho, who dislocated his left shoulder, sat out for five weeks, which was a blessing in disguise. “It wasn’t all bad,” he said. “I got to catch all of the baseball season for my kids.” He and his wife Lindsay have two young sons, ages seven and four.

Even though he’s fifth in the world, he doesn’t give any mind to the world standings. “I try not to pay any attention to that stuff, “ he said. “It doesn’t do any good till December.” The goal during the regular season: “We come out andtry to win as much as we can while we’re out here.”

Other 2015 St. Paul Rodeo champions include tie-down roper Shane Hanchey, Sulphur, La. (17.3 seconds on two head), bull riders Brennon Eldred, Sulphur, Okla. and Ty Pozzobon, Merritt, B.C.(86 points each), saddle bronc rider Taos Muncy, Corona, N.M. (87), and team ropers Erich Rogers, Round Rock, Ariz. and Cory Petska, Marana, Ariz. A new arena record was set in the barrel racing by the 2015 champion Callie DuPerier. The Boerne, Texas cowgirl had a time of 16.38 seconds. It broke the old record set in 2001 by Debbie Stahl, which was 16.63 seconds.
