Calgary Stampede Western Legacy Awards Recognize Community Spirit
Calgary – A very special celebration is set to take place at Stampede Park, with the presentation of the 2017 Calgary Stampede Western Legacy Awards. The prestigious awards honour four individuals or groups from our community who have demonstrated a significant commitment to western hospitality and community spirit. The 2017 Western Legacy Awards will be held on Wednesday, November 15.
Media is invited to attend the event and speak to the recipients about their valued contribution and the role they play within our community. The Western Legacy Awards are presented in four categories, Youth, Innovation and Sustained Contribution (individual and group).

2017 Finalists:
Youth: Awarded to a youth, age 18 or under, who has demonstrated a commitment to making a difference in our community and exhibits western values.
Lindsay Cummings
Lindsay is a champion for many local and global causes. The founder of Soap for Hope, a homebased enterprise that supports health education in developing countries, she inspires others to help change our world one person at a time.
Stephen McPhee
Stephen is a passionate advocate for homeless and vulnerable youth. He created Stephen’s Backpacks and then Footprints to address a need and tries to always be a role model for those less fortunate.
Eric Mei
Eric has a passion for helping children reach their full potential. He is a positive and enthusiastic volunteer with Reading Buddies and motivates youth to learn, to explore and be confident.
Innovation: Awarded to an individual who has created a single visionary project that reflects western values.
Christopher Lloyd
Christopher is an advocate and the volunteer president of Oneball, a local men’s cancer charity. He works tirelessly to increase awareness, education, research funding and patient assistance for testicular cancer. As a cancer survivor, he is a leader who helps others on their journey to wellness and beyond.
Mealshare, Breanne Sich
Breanne and her colleagues at Mealshare are committed to ending youth hunger in our community. Through partnerships with local restaurants, charities and schools, and by engaging dinning customers to participate, they support today’s youth as the individuals who will support the world tomorrow.
Palix Foundation, Nancy Mannix
Nancy was instrumental in developing the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative. The initiative seeks to change the way society deals with mental health issues and is a leader in our community in supporting vulnerable individuals.
Sustained Contribution (Individual): awarded to an individual who has exhibited extraordinary community support over time.
John Scott
John is a third generation rancher who preserves and lives Western values every day. A volunteer for over 60 years with various Stampede committees, he organized the first Stampede Rodeo School and continues to donate livestock to participate in the annual Parade.
Peter Spear
Peter has been a tireless outdoor advocate and volunteer for over 25 years, working to maintain Provincial Park trails for all to enjoy. He believes in inspiring others to contribute to our community and leads a group of over 300 family, friends and colleagues through the initiative Everyone Belongs Outside.
Joyce Pallister-Bronsch
Joyce is dedicated to recording and sharing Alberta’s early ranching history, and is a champion of western heritage. She is also a valued mentor to local youth in rural communities.
Sustained Contribution (Group): awarded to an organization or group (of three or more) that has exhibited extraordinary community support over time.
Discovery House
Discovery House serves women and children fleeing domestic violence in our community. Founded in 1980 as the first post-emergency women’s shelter, it is a valuable resource to access a stable living environment and sustainable positive outcomes.
Kerby Centre
The Kerby Centre, established in 1973, delivers multiple services to enhance the lives of older adults. It is committed to supporting people from 55 to 105 with programs focused on the mental, physical and social needs to help them stay in their own community.
Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre
The Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre provides support to low income and homeless Calgarians. A valued part of our community for more than 50 years, it is a one-stop for vital resources, offering people a community of belonging while rebuilding their lives.
