The dean of the 2017 class of CBR Bull of the Year nominees is the distinguished black bucking bull 735 Jack Tar. Spending his entire career in a Championship Bull Riding arena he has been winning paychecks for some of the industry’s top bull riders and his owners, Skip and Elaine Jones for five years. Known by most as 735, Jack Tar has only known one stock trailer and has been trained, hauled, and cherished by his owners Elaine and Skip Jones of JQH Bucking Bulls for his entire career as a professional bucker.

“Jack is having his best year since the first year we hauled him. We are really fortunate to have him still going as strong as he is. When we first bought him we knew that he had a stifle problem that very well might limit his longevity and thought we might get a couple of years out of him. He’s 8 years old this year and has been going strong and a rider favorite for 4 years. We are honored to have him nominated for Bull of the Year,” said Skip Jones on hearing of his perennial bucker making Tuff Hedeman’s coveted list for the first time.

It is appropriate he is nominated this year as it is his fifth trip to the CBR World Finals at Cheyenne Frontiers Days where he made his first CBR out in 2013 and his rankest career bull score (46) bucking off Tanner Learmont in 7.64 seconds.

It’s hard to know which element of his 2017 season is more important – the $73,000 of total money earned in the CBR Bull Team Challenge competing on JQH owned teams, or the assists he provided for bull riders (Briscoe, Kimzey, Radley) who were lucky enough to draw him in their quest for event titles and would go on to earn in excess of $80,000 when Jack Tar’s name was next to theirs.

Jack Tar bucked in 11 of the 16 CBR Road to Cheyenne 2017 tour stops. He provided four 90 points plus rides this season alone which upped his career total to eight. Two of those 90 point plus ride scores were posted during Sage Kimzey and Travis Briscoe’s victories in Window Rock and Las Vegas respectively.

He was the Champion Bull, highest marked ride, once this season in in Hobbs, New Mexico with Juan Alonzo as they won round 1 for 90 points.

So who would select him as their dream draw for the CBR World Finals this year?

Without a doubt Sage Kimzey would not mind a rematch with this great bucker. He has been on him four times and the duo are tied with each winning the battle twice. He has drawn 735 more than any other cowboy in Jack Tar’s five year career with CBR, but top rated Eli Vastbinder, perennial Cheyenne round winner, Juan Alonzo, and NFR qualifiers Cody Rostockyj and Trey Benton all have successful rides on JQH’s consistently consistent bucker.

Now, back to the why keeping up with the Jone’s is difficult when Jack Tar is on the bull team challenge roster. This season JQH’s $73,000 CBR bull team earnings were largely due to the consistency of 735 on their bull team. When he was on the team they earned three second place wins for JQH (Window Rock, Laughlin, Hobbs). He was on their third place team in Las Vegas and the fourth placing team in Jackson.

His career buck off rate is 57.89 with sixteen qualified rides on 38 attempts. Four times he was the rankest bull at the event and six times he a rider won the round when paired with the Jones’s beautiful black bucking bull.

If you are a right handed rider you stand a better chance than (43.48%) than left handers (85.71%) against him.

“Probably in Salina last year when Koby Radley won the event on him with a 91.5 and he was champion bull then followed that at Ft. Worth in 2016 where Corey Atwell was 90.5 on him and he was champion bull again,” added Jones.
