CBR Changes Bull Riding Event Format
Championship Bull Riding (CBR) invented the CBR Eight Seconds (:08) Format in 2012, which featured a 3 round tournament style competition for the riders in a one night performance. Twenty Four (24) riders rode in Round 1 with the Top 12 advancing to the Semi-final round. The Top 4 riders on two bulls would then advance to the Shootout Round with a potential “winner take all” scenario.
CBR has decided to return to the original rider format, which was used for the first time at the Big Tex Agriplex CBR Lufkin Bull Bash last weekend.
A minimum of thirty bull riders will compete in a Long Round with the top 15 advancing to the Short Go in the traditional style, which has been common in the industry for years. The prize purse remains $30,000 with no entry fees as part of the Road to Cheyenne Tour.
When riders were required to mount two bulls to make it to the Shoot Out Round in the previous 8 second format, there was no assurance of taking home a big payout without a qualified 8 second ride. With cowboys in mind, Chute Boss Mike White decided it was time to change the model.
The idea of a guaranteed payout, unlike the 8 second format, is appealing to the riders. Trey Holston of Fort Scott, KS, number 2 in the World Standings said, “The new format is more traditional and the chance for the bigger payout is better.”
