For the Record: Montgomery

By Matt Naber

Since 1957, the Southeastern Livestock Exposition in Montgomery, Ala., has hosted some of the biggest names of ProRodeo. That tradition will continue March 14-16 as cowboys attempt to leave their mark in the rodeo’s record book.

Steer wrestler Charlie Lowry has the longest-standing record at the Southeastern Livestock Exposition with his 1984 run of 3.2 seconds.

This Georgia cowboy is a multi-event, three-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo who amassed $331,814 in prize money during his ProRodeo career.

Lowry’s first two trips to the WNFR were as a tie-down roper in 1978-79 when he placed 13th and 14th in the average, respectively. His third, and most successful, trip to the WNFR was in 1981 as a steer wrestler, when he placed fifth in the average in 84.4 seconds on 10 head.

Although he didn’t make another WNFR qualification after 1981, Lowry went on to set the record for the fastest steer wrestling run in Montgomery. His record, and the rest, could be topped as cowboys compete for their share of the prize money.
