For the Record: Strathmore Stampede

The Strathmore (Alberta) Stampede is underway and cowboys are bringing their A-game to claim the top spot – and each ride is an opportunity to make the arena’s record book.

Since 1966, Strathmore has hosted the “Heritage Days” rodeo, but it wasn’t until 1985 that the rodeo became officially sanctioned by both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association.

Rhen Richard holds the Strathmore record for most money won in the all-around with the $8,612 that he won in 2014.

Bareback rider Caleb Bennett set the arena record in 2015 with his 91.25-point ride.

Two bulldoggers share the arena record for fastest time – first Trygve Pugh clocked in at 3.2 seconds in 2002, and then Tanner Milan matched him in 2005.

Team ropers Shane Schwenke and Jhett Johnson set the arena record in 2005 with 4.2 seconds.

Saddle bronc rider Sam Kelts has held onto the arena record since his 90-point ride in 2009.

Tie-down roper Ricky Canton’s 6.3-second time has been the Strathmore arena record since 2005.

Barrel racer Taylor Jacob set the arena record in 2015 with her 16.043-second run.

Bull rider Justin Volz set the arena record in 2002 with his 91.5-point ride.

Strathmore’s biggest payout was in 2009 with $298,400.
