Kimzey Continues Winning at San Antonio Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Two years ago, Sage Steele Kimzey from Strong City, Okla., stepped into the AT&T Center to compete at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo for the very first time.

The young bull rider not only won the championship here and $18,029, he also won the Xtreme Bulls title and another $22,278. He went on to win the first of two world titles at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) He was excited to come back to San Antonio in 2015 and defend his title. While he didn’t win another buckle, he still finished second earning $21,569. He was just $123 behind Chandler Bownds from Lubbock, Texas who won the title.

Kimzey also finished second at the 2015 edition of the Xtreme Bulls here adding $16,262 to his checking account. He has earned $78,138 here the past two years and is going to add to that total again this year.

An 87-point ride aboard Powder River Rodeo’s Udder Love put him at the top of the leaderboard in bracket 3.That was good for $2,281. He and 2012 world champion Cody Teel were the only successful bull riders in the first round. Teel, who won this rodeo the same year he won the gold buckle scored 84 and collected $1,711.

Texans Jake Brown and Shelby Herrmann both got 2016 off to a good start earning titles at the National Wester Stock Show Rodeo in Denver. They both took the top spot in their events here as well. Brown from Hillsboro, tied with Mason Clements from Sandy, Utah for the bareback riding win. They each had 83.5-point rides on horses from Calgary Stampede to win $1,996.

Herrmann, who won a scholarship here in 2013 had the fast time in the women’s barrel racing. The Stephenville, resident stopped the clock in 14.04 seconds earning $2,281.

With the money they won in the first round, all of these contestants are in good shape to advance to the semifinals. The eighth performance of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo will see bracket 3 having their second round of competition. Action starts in the AT&T Center at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
