Mike Mathis Named 2015 Justin Committeeman of the Year

by ProRodeo.com | Nov 09, 2015

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On Nov. 3, Mike Mathis thought he was just going to a meeting about the Angelina Benefit Rodeo in his hometown of Lufkin, Texas.

The last thing he thought was going to happen was finding out he had been named the 2015 Justin Committeeman of the Year, but that’s what transpired.

“I was stunned, shocked and very, very surprised,” said Mathis, 62. “I didn’t even know I had been nominated.”

Mathis was nominated by the Lufkin (Texas) Host Lions Club, which puts on the annual Angelina Benefit Rodeo every April.

“I was very honored, but by the same token, very humbled because those guys are the ones who do the work,” Mathis said. “I just organize the rodeo and that sort of thing.”

Mathis serves as the rodeo coordinator at the Angelina Benefit Rodeo.

He is the fifth winner from the Lone Star State, and the first since DeLois Thompson in 2010.

The Nov. 20 ProRodeo Sports News will include a full feature story on Mathis.
