Sudden Debt Takes Jacoby to Bull Riding Lead at Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas — Sudden debt usually isn’t good news, but for bull rider Elliot Jacoby, a bull named Sudden Debt was great Wednesday night at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.

The Fredericksburg, Texas, cowboy was matched with the crossbred black bull from the Silver Creek Rodeo Company during his first round of competition. After a successful ride that resulted in an 88.5-point score, he took the lead in the first round of competition.

It was much needed for Jacoby. It’s been three years since he was among the best bull riders in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He had qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2013 and 2014. Then an injured groin followed by a year where he didn’t ride to his potential left him watching rodeo’s championships on television.

Last year, he was just outside the top 15 at 20th. With a win here, he will get his season off to a good start and could be back in Las Vegas next December. He will have his second-round bull here on Thursday night and that matchup has the potential to be another high score. He will get on Grandpa Joe from Dakota Rodeo, a bull that has been selected for several championship events.

While Jacoby is excited about his success here, he still gets nervous every time he gets on a bull. The nerves are all from a desire to do well, not because he is climbing on the back of an 1,800-pound animal that is determined to get him off his back. Jacoby also has added to his family with a daughter Emrie Skye who gives him an extra reason to want to do well.

“It’s more important than ever,” he said. “It’s not just me anymore. Winning Fort Worth would be huge for me. It’s such a prestigious, traditional place. I love the buckles here—they haven’t changed the style over the years and that makes them really special. It would mean a lot to me to keep this up.”

Jacoby is not in the 2018 world standings yet. He stands to win a good check in the first round and if he adds to that, he would move into the top 15. He was one of two successful bull riders here on Wednesday. Lane Nobles, from Gatesville, Texas, who scored 86.5 on a bull named Salty Dog, might be buying real estate here. He won the Fort Worth Xtreme Bulls competition last week and took home more than $16,000 and is placing second behind Jacoby in the first round.
