Welsh Wastes No Time at the Wrangler Champions Challenge in Cody

by Ann Bleiker

It appears the Arizona cowgirl Jill Welsh and her horse, Custer, feel right at home in Cody, Wyo. During the Fourth of July run the duo took top honors during the Cody Stampede stopping the clock in a time of 16.91 seconds and pocketed $9,517. That run and payday helped push her to the top of the leaderboard for the Fourth of July run.

Welsh, of Parker, Ariz., was then given the opportunity to run in Cody again during the Wrangler Champions Challenge presented by Justin Boots, on August 16. This was the first year for Cody, Wyo., to be a stop on the Champions Challenge and by all reports it was a success.

It was definitely a success for Welsh stopping the clock in 17.50 seconds, pocketing another $5,440. WPRA World Champion Mary Walker was second with a time of 17.54 seconds, Michele McLeod was third (17.56), Sarah Rose McDonald took fourth (17.58) and Callie duPerier rounded out the top five in a time of 17.80 seconds.

The next stop on the Wrangler Champions Challenge schedule is Kennewick, Wash., on August 25, followed by Pueblo, Colo., on Sept. 2.
