DeMoss Gets Surprise at Caldwell Night Rodeo

By Susan Kanode for the Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho – Saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss arrived in Caldwell early before his competition at the Caldwell Night Rodeo.

A stop at Idaho’s Cowboy Supply and a look at the Caldwell Night Poster gave him a glimpse of his ride here last year on Powder River Rodeo’s horse named Pearl’s My Handle. That ride not only put him on the poster, it earned him a spot in the championships and helped him to a fourth-place finish in 2016.

The Heflin, Louisiana, resident loves getting on bucking horses and after seeing his poster was ready to ride here on Thursday. What a ride he made. He got on Burch Rodeo’s Strawberry Rocket who did everything he could to buck DeMoss off. It didn’t work and when the judges added up their scores, DeMoss had 88 points by his name.

“It’s not every day you get to have your picture on a rodeo poster,” DeMoss said. “Especially at a big rodeo like this. Then to come have a ride like I did was icing on the cake.”

The 88-point score puts him in second place behind the 2015 world champion Jacobs Crawley who has 88.5. Right after Cody made his way down the arena in front of the near-capacity crowd, his younger brother Heith DeMoss, also from Heflin, rode for 84 points. They will both be back here on Saturday night to ride for the championships and if either of them finish at the top of the leaderboard it would be the first Caldwell Night Rodeo championship to be won by one of the brothers.

There is a new leader in the bull riding. Scotty Knapp, from Albuquerque, N.M., rode D & H Cattle Company’s Savage Moves to an 89-point score. Knapp, who qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last year is now in first place. The bull riding here is one round, so if Knapp’s score holds through the next two performances, he stands to get a big paycheck.

The fourth performance of the rodeo begins at 8 p.m., Friday night. It is Patriot Night and will be raising funds for the Caldwell Night Rodeo’s Military Relief Fund. More information is available at www.caldwellnightrodeo.com.
