Pennsylvania Native takes Bull Riding Lead at Cody Stampede

CODY, Wyo., – An 87.5-point score after an eight-second ride was enough to put a big smile on bull rider Dustin Bowen’s face.

Bowen rode Mobetta Rodeo’s bull named Woody at the third performance of the rodeo on Monday night to move into first place. If that holds, he stands to earn a healthy $8,500 check. That’s always important, but especially for Bowen who is currently 12th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Bowen competed in youth and then high school rodeo in bull riding and bareback riding. He finished in the top three in the bull riding two times at the National High School Rodeo Association Finals and caught the eye of the rodeo coach at Odessa College in Texas.

That led to trips to Casper, Wyoming to compete at the College National Finals Rodeo. He then took the next step in his rodeo journey joining the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2012. In 2015, he qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Now living in Waller, Texas, where it’s easier to rodeo from, Bowen is in hot pursuit of another trip to Las Vegas to compete at rodeo’s championships. He was on pace to qualify in 2016, but an injury to his shoulder on his riding arm saw him outside of the top 15. He finished the year in 29th place with $44,416 in earnings.

He has already surpassed those earnings this year. He has $47,186 and stands to add to that over the lucrative Fourth of July known as “Cowboy Christmas.” He got some money at the Greeley, Colorado Xtreme Bulls competition and is also leading the rodeo at Prescott, Arizona.

Rodeo competition at the 98th Cody Stampede concludes on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 with the final performance beginning at 5 p.m.
