After the Crown: Donna Keffler Miss Rodeo South Dakota 1981, Miss Rodeo America 1982

Just two days before the start of the Miss Rodeo South Dakota 1981 pageant held in the historic Belle Fourche, South Dakota, Donna Keffler entered. In a very short period of time Donna put together her wardrobe, studied, and found a reining horse to ride for the contest. In three days’ time her life would be changed forever as the crown was placed on her head.

This South Dakota Cowgirl may have had an untraditional start to being a state title holder but her message is truly authentic, and hold onto the values of what we do. That is, be a cowgirl. Ride like a cowgirl and be tough like one. During her reign she promoted the state’s sport with the up most enthusiasm and grace. In fact she attended only and all rodeos in the state of South Dakota. This very core idea of being a cowgirl, her dedication, and loyalty to rodeo led her to the coveted title of Miss Rodeo America 1982.

When asked what her favorite experience or take away was from her years in the crown, her reply was “the people.” Donna said when she became a state title holder after being a competitor that the industry embraced her. The people made her feel included as part of ‘Rodeo Family.’ Being involved in the industry and being introduced to sponsors as Miss Rodeo South Dakota and Miss Rodeo America paved the way for her current position as the National Event Coordinator for Coors Banquet for the PRCA and PBR. She said a lesson she has had to learn as a woman in the western industry is, “respect is hard earned.” Donna is very passionate about her job with PRCA sponsor Coors Banquet and enjoys it thoroughly, attributing the job connection to her time as a state and national title holder. Her time in crown allowed her to show her ability to be the voice of a company and brand. When asked what her greatest advice for a woman in our industry it was, “be professional, act with authority, and have respect.” All admirably qualities Donna Keffler endorses every day to girls wanting to be in a positon in the western industries, wanting to be a state title holder, and after the crown.
