Bull Rider Dallee Mason Splits Prescott Victory

Dallee Mason isn’t a young, up-and-coming bull rider.

At age 32, however, the Idaho cowboy craves the adrenaline rush and can still compete with the PRCA’s best cowboys.

Mason proved that when he split the win with Daylon Swearingen at the World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Ariz., which concluded July 5.

Mason had an 84.5-point ride on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Last Cigarette, while Swearingen also had an 84.5-point trip on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Reality Check.

“It’s always good when you make the whistle,” Mason said. “I didn’t know a whole lot about that bull and just rode him jump for jump, and he made me hustle for it. It wasn’t a gimme, that’s for sure, but it turned out to be a good ride.”

Mason earned $7,222 for his eight seconds of work and his first career win in Prescott. Before his Prescott victory, he was top 25 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

“I’m dang-sure happy I won that buckle,” Mason said. “It’s a cool buckle, and it’s the World’s Oldest Rodeo, which is cool.”

When rodeos were halted from mid-March to the third week of May because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mason kept busy.

“I was working on the family ranch (in Weiser, Idaho) getting the cows turned out for the summer and cowboying,” Mason said. “I’ve also been doing a little bit of team roping. It’s fun to team rope with my buddies.”

Mason, who is a team roping heeler, was quick to point out bull riding is his passion.

“I love bull riding, and it was great to get back on the road,” he said. “I was riding horses every single day, and I was ready to get back to bull riding.”

This week, Mason competed in Cody, Wyo., Oakley City, Utah, and Prescott.

“I just want to try and win as much as I can wherever I go,” Mason said. “Bull riding is something I have done my whole life, this is what I do. My retirement plan is team roping.”

Mason joined the PRCA in 2012 and finished a career-best 25th in the PRCA world standings in 2015. He was 35th in the world standings a year ago.

Other winners at the $285,491 rodeo were all-around cowboy JC Mortensen ($3,755, bareback riding and bull riding); bareback riders Ty Breuer (87 points on Vold Rodeo’s Misty Frontier) and Tanner Aus (87 points on Vold Rodeo’s Beaver Valley); steer wrestler Jacob Edler (9.6 seconds on two head); team ropers Clay Tryan/Jake Long (11.9 seconds on two head); saddle bronc rider Wyatt Casper (83.5 points on Vold Rodeo’s I’m a Be); tie-down roper Hunter Herrin (17.4 seconds on two head); barrel racer Wenda Johnson (34.11 seconds on two runs); and steer roper Garrett Hale (41.6 seconds on three head).
