Dougherty Wins Round 1 of PBR’s First PREMIER Bank PREMIER Bankcard Invitational in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – As Round 1 of the PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders) First PREMIER Bank PREMIER Bankcard Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, concluded on Saturday night at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, the Friday night ride of Chase Dougherty (Decatur, Texas) was enough for the Texan to claim his first round win of the 2022 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast (UTB) season.

The Top 5 riders from Friday’s opening night of Round 1 held tight to their lead after the field of 25 competing during Saturday’s conclusion of the round were utterly dominated by their bulls, recording only three qualified rides.

In a field of 65 riders split across two nights of competition for the opening round, Dougherty’s ride for 89.25 points aboard Concealed Carry (Gene Owen / Jerry Rush) on Friday night clinched the Round 1 win.

The highest score of the entire two-day extended round – the first out of the three-day event in Sioux Falls – brought the 23-year-old Texan 28 world points.

Starting the weekend at No. 14 in the world standings, he now moves up two spots to No. 12.

 
The weekend in Sioux Falls showcases a unique format for fans, with the three-day event also including a 15/15 Bucking Battle.

The draw features 65 riders competing in Round 1, which will involve riders split into two groups for the first two nights of competition.

On Friday night, the 15 riders competing in Saturday evening’s 15/15 Bucking Battle and an additional 25 riders each attempted one bull. Round 1 then concluded on Saturday with the remaining 25 riders who did not compete Friday attempting one bull each.

For Round 2 on Sunday, all seeded riders for the event will automatically advance, along with those competing on injury exemptions or with a Velocity Tour invite and any of the 35 invited competitors who logged a qualified ride in Round 1.

The 12 bull riders with the top combined ride scores following the first two rounds will then advance to the championship round later on Sunday.

Dougherty’s fellow Texan Austin Richardson (Dallas, Texas) finished in second place courtesy of his 88-point ride aboard I’m No Angel (Cooper/ Scruggs Bucking Bulls).

The 22-year-old bull rider collected 18 world points to move up one spot from No. 16 in the world standings to No. 15 as he heads into Sunday.

Coming in third, Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil) collected 17 world points.

After pairing with Look Alive (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) for 87.75 points on Friday, Aparecido looks toward Sunday to advance from No. 13 in the world standings into the Top 10.

 
Derek Kolbaba (Walla Walla, Washington) and Alex Marcilio (Macaubal, Brazil) shared fourth in Round 1 after recording matching 86.75-point scores on Friday night.

Kolbaba conquered Risen’s Freight Train (Cooper/Scruggs Bucking Bulls), while Marcilio’s score was courtesy of his ride aboard Can’t Get Right (Flying V Bucking Bulls).

Both riders earned 15.5 world points for their efforts.

Kolbaba rolls into Sunday as the No. 16 rider in the world standings.

Marcilio, who began the weekend at No. 66 in the world standings, moved up to No. 57 after his success in Round 1.

South Dakota’s own Matt Triplett (Canton, South Dakota) didn’t have the Saturday night his home state fans were hoping for.

Despite the eight-time PBR World Finals qualifier’s best efforts, his bovine opponent Chubby (Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) bested him in a mere 4.09 seconds. Despite the upset, the 30-year-old veteran holds the No. 24 spot in the world standings and will return to ride in Sunday’s Round 2.

The best bull riders in the world will return to the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on Sunday, April 3, for Round 2 followed by the championship round of the PBR First PREMIER Bank PREMIER Bankcard Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires.
