High Scores Seen in Bareback and Saddle Bronc Riding at Reno Rodeo

By Susan Kanode
For the Reno Rodeo

RENO, Nev. – It was a great night for bareback and saddle bronc riders at the Reno Rodeo on Tuesday.

In both events, there were at least three scores that were over 80 points. This was the first of their two rounds of competition, so the overall leaderboard could change significantly after Wednesday night’s rodeo.

Leading off the bareback riding was Clayton Biglow from Clements, Calif. Biglow rode Flying Five Rodeo’s Rio’s Edge for 83 points. He is leading the race for the rookie of the year in the bareback riding and is currently 11th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings.

Biglow finished one point ahead of his traveling partner Wyatt Denny from Minden, Nev. Last week in Casper, Wyo., the duo battled for the top spot at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) where Denny finished in the top spot and Biglow was the reserve champion.

They were part of the men’s champion team at the CNFR representing Feather River College located just 83 miles northwest of Reno in Quincy, Calif. Their coach, Jesse Segura, and other team members were all recognized in the arena.

Ryan Mackenzie is now tied for first place in the saddle bronc riding after scoring 84.5 points on Big Bend Rodeo’s Crash Gate. The Homedale, Idaho, cowboy is now tied with Taos Muncy from Corona, N.M., for first place in the round. Jake Wright, from Milford, Utah, celebrated his birthday here with an 93 point ride.

There is a new overall leader in the steer wrestling and he comes from the Big Sky country in Montana. Ty Erickson is placing third in the first round with a 4.1-second run. He made that run at Tuesday morning slack, then came back during the performance and stopped the clock in 4.3 seconds. That put him in a tie for third in the second round and first overall with a total time of 8.4 seconds. Nick Guy from Sparta, Wisc., is now in second with 8.7.

Wednesday night’s sixth performance starts at 7 p.m.
