Lockhart Family Pick up Three Checks in Wall, S.D.
While most rodeos are making the tough decision to cancel their rodeo for 2020, the committee in Wall, S.D., wasn’t about to cancel their inaugural year as a PRCA Rodeo. The Wall Celebration marked their first year as a PRCA Rodeo and included WPRA Breakaway Roping as a featured event as well. The rodeo drew top names across the board but none larger in the Badlands Circuit than the Lockhart family.
Thirteen-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Lisa Lockhart competed in the barrel racing finishing third in a time of 16.83 seconds. Her son, a member of the Weatherford (Texas) College rodeo team, Thane finished third in the tie-down roping in a time of 9.4 seconds, and her daughter, Alyssa, finished in a tie for third in the breakaway roping in a time of 2.2 seconds.
“This wasn’t our first PRCA rodeo to compete in together but was our first to all win a check,” said a very proud Lisa Lockhart. “And we didn’t even get to compete on the same day together due to the scheduling but that is rodeo for you.”
This wasn’t the first time the family had competed in that arena as there have been amateur and high school rodeos in Wall in the past, which is just a mere 121 miles from the Lockhart ranch in Oelrichs, S.D. Rodeo has long been touted as a family sport and many have found great success in the sport. Many have heard the story of the Etbauer brothers pooling their winnings to get to the next rodeo but Lisa doesn’t forsee that happening in their family.
“There will be no chance of pooling with this family,” laughed Lisa. “We haven’t even been able to pool our travel expenses as just the other day we were going in four different directions.”
In addition to Lisa, Alyssa and Thane competing on the pro circuit the youngest, Cade, who just turned 17 in June, stays busy competing in high school rodeo. Lisa’s husband, Grady, a professional tie-down roper who won the Badlands Circuit title in 1996, keeps the family going by holding down the fort at home and being their biggest cheerleader and supporter.
“He still ropes but I don’t think he wants to get back into competition full-time,” said Lisa about her husband. “He certainly enjoys helping all of us especially the kids as it is very rewarding to help them get to where they are at.”
Keep an eye on the Lockhart family as we are sure this won’t be the only time all of them will win a check at a professional rodeo.
Shayla Howell won the breakaway roping in Wall in a time of 2.0 seconds, while Lindsay Kruse took the barrel racing win in a time of 16.60 seconds. Kruse added a second place finish in Wolf Point, Montana, as well behind WPRA World Champion Mary Walker.
In addition to the check in Wall, S.D., Lisa Lockhart pocketed a second place check worth $3,512 at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo in Vernal, Utah. Shelley Morgan of Eustace, Texas, won the rodeo in Vernal in a time of 17.04 seconds, to Lockhart’s 17.06 seconds.
