PBR Joins with Buc Days for Two-Day Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Event in Corpus Christi, Texas Apr. 30-May 1

By: Kacie Albert

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – For the first time in league history, PBR (Professional Bull Riders) will unite with the iconic Buc Days in Corpus Christi, Texas, holding the two-day Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour (PWVT) Buc Days PBR Chute Out, presented by Coastal Bend Chevy Dealers, Apr. 30-May 1 at American Bank Center.

For two nights only, some of the best bull riders in the world will battle the sport’s rankest bovine athletes in the ultimate showdown of man vs. beast in one of the most exciting live sporting events to witness.

In cooperation with local government, as well as ASM Global and American Bank Center, PBR has instituted a series of fan safety protocols for a safe and responsible event, including:

• All fans, as well as staff and competitors, will be required to wear face masks that cover both their nose and mouth inside American Bank Center. Small children who cannot keep a face mask in place are exempt.
• All PBR staff, riders and stock contractors will be subject to COVID-19 (coronavirus) medical testing and daily temperature checks.
• PBR will sell limited arena capacity to separate fans.
• All fans will be in POD seating, which increases distancing and minimizes fan crossover when entering and exiting their seats. PBR will continue to monitor local regulations, increasing seat availability when within local regulations.
• Signage will be placed strategically throughout American Bank Center to encourage physical distancing and health safety protocols and remind guests of new and updated policies.
• Increased sanitization of high-contact areas, including bathrooms, concourses, concession stands, elevators, dining areas, and the American Bank Center Box Office.
• Hand sanitizer stations will be placed throughout the venue in high touch point areas to promote hand hygiene.

While this season’s event will mark the first PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event held in conjunction with Buc Days, the league’s expansion series has made two previous stops in Corpus Christi.

Colten Jesse (Konawa, Oklahoma) won the debut event in October 2017, while reigning PBR World Champion Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) was victorious at the most recent Velocity Tour event in the city in December 2018.

Last season, PBR brought a one-of-a-kind bull riding event to Corpus Christi in November, with the PBR US Air Force Reserve Cowboys for a Cause, a team event atop the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi Bay that launched the sport’s new charitable initiative.

The Buc Days PBR Chute Out, presented by Coastal Bend Chevy Dealers, will tentatively mark the ninth PWVT event of the year, with PBR’s fastest-growing tour first stopping in cities including Greenville, South Carolina; Lexington, Kentucky; Pensacola, Florida and Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The 2021 Buc Days will begin on Thursday, April 29 with the launch of the Stripes Carnival at American Bank Center, which will remain in operation for the entirety of the festival, followed by the annual Dunking of the Mayor. Other festivities scheduled to be held at American Bank Center for the 2021 Buc Days include the Wings Over South Texas Air Show May 1-2 and the Navy Army Night Parade at the Parade Pachanga May 2.

As one of the initial events for the 11-day spectacle celebrating the western lifestyle, the PBR Velocity Tour event will also be accompanied by the first stop of the WCRA’s (World Champions Rodeo Alliance) Triple Crown of Rodeo.

Marking the alliance’s first event of 2021, Rodeo Corpus Christi, presented by Miller Lite, will be held from May 6-9, paying out more than $500,000 to top western sports athletes in nine disciplines: bareback riding, women’s breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, steer roping, team roping (heading and heeling), tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding.

Following Round 2, the Top 15 will then advance to the championship round, where they will attempt one final bull, all in an effort to be crowned the event champion.
