SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo started it’s 18-day run three days ago and rodeo contestants are already anticipating trips back here to compete in the Semifinals.

At the top of the list is bareback rider Mason Clements of Draper, Utah. Clements has two Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) qualifications to his credit, in 2017 and 2018. He missed a good part of the 2019 season, including the rodeo here, because of injuries. He also missed another trip to Las Vegas to compete at the NFR after finishing 16th in the world standings.

That fueled a fire that is getting hotter by the week. Clements was seventh in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings when San Antonio’s rodeo kicked off. He was the high-money earner in Bracket 1 at $7,000 and stands to add even more to his checking account when he returns to compete here in the Semifinals.

He won the first round on Thursday, finished second on Friday, then won again on Saturday afternoon. His final win came aboard the notorious horse from Beutler and Son Rodeo named Killer Bee. While the ride wasn’t one for the record books at 79 points, it was the highest score of the day and got Clements $2,500 of his $7,000.

Bracket 2 started with a new set of contestants on Saturday night. The first-place spot in the bareback riding, steer wrestling and team roping was split amongst competitors. Reigning world champion bareback rider Clayton Biglow of Clements, California and Shane O’Connell, from Rapid City, S.D., each had 84-point rides.

Canadian Tanner Milan and Nebraskan Kalane Anders were each 4.3 seconds in the steer wrestling. Former San Antonio team roping champion Coleman Proctor was in the mix. Proctor, from Pryor, Oklahoma is roping with Ryan Motes, from Weatherford, Texas. Cody Snow from Los Olivos, California and Paul Eaves from Lonedell, Missouri along with Proctor and Motes had times of 4.2 seconds. Each of these contestants got $2,250 for their efforts.

They will have their second and third rounds of competition on Sunday at 1 and 7 p.m. where the top four money earners in each event will advance to the Semifinals.
