Three-Time Canadian Champion Aaron Roy Remains Red-Hot, Wins Third Event of Season in Humboldt, Saskatchewan

By: Kacie Albert

HUMBOLDT, Sask. – Three-time PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Champion Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) remained red-hot as the 2023 season continued this past weekend in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, delivering the high-marked ride of the tour stop to win the Touring Pro Division’s Humboldt PBR, presented by Discovery Ford Sales.

For Roy, who is chasing his unprecedented fourth national title this November, the win marked his third of the season, having previously emerged victorious at the elite Cup Series, presented by Wrangler, event in Brandon, Manitoba, and the Touring Pro Division stop the day prior in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

At Discovery Ford Sales in Humboldt, despite bucking off in Round 1, tossed by Big Easy (Skori Bucking Bulls) in a hard-fought 7.63 seconds, Roy earned a second chance by advancing to the championship round on time.

Making the most of the opportunity, Roy remained in perfect time with Finning Nikki Sixx (Flying For Bucking Bulls), matching the powerful animal athlete jump-for-jump en route to the 8-second whistle.

Marked a commanding 87 points, the score was enough to clinch the veteran the victory.

Roy earned a much needed 27 national points.

He climbed from No. 3 to No. 2 in the battle to be crowned the 2023 PBR Canada Champion, inching within 68 points of No. 1 Jared Parsonage (Maple Creek, Saskatchewan).

Jake Dunham (Tucson, Arizona) was second, collecting 19 national points.

Much like Roy, Dunham advanced to the final round on time after being upended by Funkadelic (CS Bucking Bulls) in a close 5.32 seconds as competition got underway.

Quick to rebound, the Arizonan rode Howlin’ Wolf (Flying Four Bucking Bulls) for 83.5 points to cement his silver showing.

Third was youngster Ashton Sahli (Red Deer, Alberta).

Sahli was sensational in Round 1, delivering the top score when he covered Gandy (Skori Bucking Bulls) for 82.5 points.

The Albertan, however, fell short of the win in the championship round when he was bested by Whiskey Clouds (Skori Bucking Bulls) in a quick 2.93 seconds.

Sahli collected 19 national points. He remained No. 17 in the Canadian national standings, rising within 197 points of No. 1 Parsonage.

As the only other rider to deliver a score, Blake Smith (Abbey, Saskatchewan) was fourth.

Going 1-for-2, Smith converted in the opening round when he topped Trailer Trash (Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp.) for 80 points.

Netting 15 national points, Smith rose one position in the 2023 PBR Canada Championship race, elevated from No. 19 to No. 18. He is now 220.5 points removed from the top spot.

In the bull pen, no animal athlete bucked better than The Remedy (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/B2 Braithwaite Ranches), crowned the Bull of the Event. Out in the championship round, The Remedy tossed Smith in 2.97 seconds to earn an event-best 44-point bull score.

The 2023 PBR Canada season continues Wednesday, June 21 for the fifth elite Cup Series, presented by Wrangler, event of the season in Regina, Saskatchewan. The PBR Regina Classic at Brandt Centre gets underway at 7 p.m. CST.
