Weekly Recap

Local records were broken and ProRodeo history was made as the calendar flipped from January to February. Last week was all about quality over quantity as the five competitions held Jan. 28 through Feb. 3 were worth a collective $287,147, the bulk of which came from Rodeo Rapid City (S.D.).

Saddle bronc rider J.J. Elshere made PRCA history when he scored 93.5 points on Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic From Hell at the PRCA Xtreme Broncs Match in Rapid City, S.D., Jan. 30. His score was the third-highest in ProRodeo history.

The fastest times and highest scores might not always make the record book, but they make a lasting memory for fans and competitors. With about 650 PRCA competitions across the Western Hemisphere each year, there are plenty of opportunities to make a memorable ride.

Although the prize money differs from one competition to the next, the judging remains consistent across the board.

In addition to the fame that comes with winning the most prize money, each ride was a chance to be the best of the week. Here’s a look at the highest scores and fastest times for each event during that period.

Bareback rider Wyatt Denny posted the top score of the 2019 leaderboard when he made a 90.5-point ride on Fettig Pro Rodeo’s Classic Rock at Rapid City, Jan. 31. It was also a rodeo record.

Steer wrestler Baxtor Roche made the fastest run of the week with his 3.5-second run at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 29.

Team ropers Clay Smith and Jake Long continued their hot streak when they clocked in at 3.5 seconds at the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo on Feb. 3, just one week after winning the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver. The quick run tied the San Angelo Rodeo record.

Tie-down roper Jake Pratt made the leaderboard for the season with his 7.0-second run in San Angelo, Feb. 1. Pratt’s time is the third-fastest time of the 2019 season behind the 6.8-second runs made by Tanner Green in Waco, Texas, and Chance Oftedahl in Louisville, Ky.

Barrel racer Cally Kindred made a 12.74-second run at Rapid City, Jan. 31.

Two bull riders scored 89 points this week. The first one came from Dallee Mason on Rafter G Rodeo’s King Herod in Fort Worth, Jan. 28. Then on Feb. 2, Aaron Williams scored 89 points on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Tequila Worm in San Angelo.
