PRCA Standings Shuffle: Shane Proctor Enters Bull Riding Top 15

Shane Proctor has been around the block. The veteran bull rider has qualified for six Wrangler National Finals Rodeos and has himself in position for a return trip to Las Vegas in 2022.

Highlighted by rodeo wins in Calgary, Alberta, and Sidney, Mont., over the last three weeks he has moved up to the No. 15 spot in the latest PRCA | RAM World Standings with $69,640.

Proctor was sitting 25th back on July 19th, a 10-spot jump in the standings in less than a month. He said the win north of the border changed his season plans a bit.

“Calgary was a big turning point for me,” said Proctor, 37. “When I won Calgary, I was just traveling with my wife (Haley) and my little girl (Coulee). She is a specialty act and works big rodeos, so I was just entering wherever they were going.

“She asked me after the win in Calgary if I was going to enter anymore rodeos and I said, ‘no I’ll probably just keep traveling with you guys,’ but she said I think maybe you should consider it.”

The advice from his wife has paid off. Last weekend, Proctor traveled to the Richland County Fair and Rodeo in Sidney, Mont., and earned an event best $11,992. He believes a change in mentality this season has brought positive results.

“I think it comes down to not forcing myself to win,” he said. “There are guys out there that are putting so much pressure on themselves to make the Finals and I’m kind of the opposite.

“It’s a great motivation, but in the end, I just want to be there with my family. I think it’s making it easier that I’m not just grinding myself to death like I normally would. I’m enjoying the sport for what it is and what it has brought me in my career.”
