Standings Shuffle: 41 Move Up in Top 15

Steer wrestler Tyler Pearson won a PRCA world championship in 2017 but in 15 years of ProRodeo competition, the Louisville, Miss., cowboy hadn’t won what he considers to be his home state rodeo, the Dixie National Rodeo in Jackson.

That all changed on Feb. 17. Before then, his friends and family were mostly limited to seeing his wins on TV.

Pearson’s won about $1 million since his rookie year in 2006 thanks in part to making four trips to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2013, 2017-19).

“It’s good to get a jumpstart in Jackson,” Pearson said. “I’d never had much luck there, so to get some in a hometown rodeo is nice.”

In Jackson, Pearson split the win in Round 2 with 3.9-second run and finished third in the first round with 4.0 second effort. Those runs powered him to the average victory with a 7.9-second time on two head. He earned $5,980.

“Being around Mississippi folks and to do good in front of them meant a lot,” Pearson said. “It’s something I’d never done before and to have success at my hometown and share it with my family and friends who were all there to watch was pretty cool.”

Pearson’s win pushed him from outside the top 50 to 10th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $6,269. A welcomed change in position after finishing 31st in 2020.

“It’s a long year and it’ll be really nice to be in in the Top 15 in about six months,” Pearson said.

With more major rodeos on the horizon, big jumps such as Pearson’s are sure to happen again.

Cowboys on the bubble for a spot in the Top 15 can find themselves a few dollars short of qualifying for the Wrangler NFR. The end of the 2021 season is so far away that the bubble doesn’t matter yet, but it’s still noteworthy to see who is on the cusp of breaking into the Top 15.

• Steer wrestler Nick Guy moved from 20th and is $110 away from breaking into the Top 15.
• Team roping heeler Cullen Teller moved from 43rd and is $49 away from breaking into the Top 15.
• Tie-down roper Riley Pruitt moved from 42nd and is $248 away from breaking into the Top 15.
