Bryson Sechrist Takes Tie-Down Roping in Lawton
Bryson Sechrist has always wanted to win his hometown rodeo in Lawton, Okla.
On Saturday, Aug. 14, he saw that dream come true, claiming the title of Lawton Rangers Rodeo tie-down roping champion.
“It seems like one of the hardest ones to win money at, but getting to win it has been my dream goal ever since I could walk,” Sechrist said.

Fulfilling his dream meant out-roping some of the biggest names in tie-down roping, names like reigning World Champion Shad Mayfield and 2019 World Champion Haven Meged. To do so, Sechrist made an 8.3-second run.
“I knew I had a pretty good (calf), so I was just going to try to see the start and just come back up,” Sechrist said. “When I had my hands up, I just couldn’t really believe I was 8.3 (seconds).”
After the $5,001 win, Sechrist had the chance to go home for a few days, a rarity for cowboys on the road.
The 29-year-old loves competing, but he’s found it a challenge to hit the road this season. His daughter, Maybrey, was born in March.
“It’s really, really hard leaving home and being away from the wife and the baby,” Sechrist said.
Having spent extra time at home with his family meant less time on the road this year, keeping him from some rodeos. With a few weeks left in the season, Sechrist is looking to finish strong and set himself up for the future.
Sechrist entered the weekend just inside the top 50 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. The win moved him into the top 40. He has a little more work to do to accomplish one of his season’s goals.

“I’m trying to stay in the Top 30 so I can get to Houston and San Antonio for next year,” he said.
Other winners at the $158,536 rodeo were bareback rider Jess Pope (90 points on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Bad Influence); steer wrestler Denard Butler (8.0 seconds on two); team ropers Clay Tryan/Jake Long (9.7 seconds on two); saddle bronc rider Brody Cress (87.5 points on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Nutrena’s Full Deck); barrel racer Jessica Routier (17.01 seconds); and bull rider Josh Frost (92 points on Powder River Rodeo’s Chiseled). Wyatt Muggli was the all-around cowboy ($132, tie-down roping and team roping).
