Toves Wins Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s Ticketsmarter Classic in Oakland

By: Cally Anderson

OAKLAND, Calif. – As the PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) Ticketsmarter Classic rolled to a close on Saturday night, 28-year-old Taylor Toves (Stephenville, Texas) triumphantly clinched the event win.

Toves was paired with Regulator (Humpz and Hornz/Frances Dandy) in Round 1 of the night, firing out of the chutes for an impressive, round-winning 87 points.

As the exceptional animal athletes of the PBR dominated all but one matchup in the championship round, the Texan cowboy paired with Dagger (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) as the night ended. Despite Toves’s best efforts, he was no match for the powerful bovine, being flung to the ground after a mere 2.53 seconds.

The veteran rider leaves Oakland with 37 world points.

Fellow Texan Daniel Keeping (Gorman, Texas) was hot on Toves’s heels earlier in the night, capturing second place overall.

Keeping was paired with War Paint (Humpz and Hornz) in Round 1 for a solid 86 points.

He then set his sights on the championship round but was tossed to the ground by Twin Buttes (Jeb Fredericks/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in 6.69 seconds.

Keeping collected 24 world points for his efforts.

Blake Smith (Abbey, Canada) kept the 1-for-2 streak going by bucking off his Round 1 opponent Redginator (Diamond Bar Cattle/Premier Ag) at 5.42 seconds. He then bested his bovine opponent Dennis The Menace (Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) in the championship round for 84 points.

Smith earned 15 world points for his third-place finish.

27-year-old Gage Gay (Staley, North Carolina) gritted it out to finish in fourth place at Oracle Arena.

Gay launched from the chutes in Round 1 aboard Past Midnight (Humpz and Hornz) for a resounding 84 points. His 3.46-second dance with Not Today (Nancy/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) as Saturday came to a close was still met with cheers from fans.

The North Carolina cowboy heads home with 11 world points.

Canadian rider Nick Tetz (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) rounded out the Top 5 in Oakland.

In Round 1, Tetz was paired with Spirit Guide (Rodriguez Bucking Bulls) for 83 points. The championship round was not the ride he had hoped for as he was tossed to the ground by Sam I Am (Heald Pro Bulls/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) at 5.51 seconds.

The earlier ride netted him six world points.

The talented bull riders of the PWVT will next head to Casper, Wyoming, for the PBR Casper Invitational at Ford Wyoming Center on April 2.
