2020 Rookie of the Year Campbell Wins Round 1 of Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals

By: Mandi McCary

LAS VEGAS – On a night where the top cowboys of the PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour were laser-focused on the coveted world points on the line, 2020 PBR Rookie of the Year Boudreaux Campbell (Crockett, Texas) was the night’s top rider, winning Round 1.

Campbell, who sits at No. 5 in the world standings as the 2021 PBR World Finals approaches next week, was paired with Chief (Blake Sharp/Michael Floyd) as Saturday night rolled to a close. The cheers from fans rose to a deafening level when Campbell’s 90-point ride score was announced.

The win earned the Texas cowboy 15 world points in his quest to close the gap between himself and his closest competitor – world No. 4 Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil).

With 105 world points on the line, top riders like Vieira and No. 2 Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) arrived in Las Vegas early, looking to ultimately close the gap on reigning World Champion and world No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil).

Pacheco, who sits 607 points behind Leme in the world title race, rode Blue Duck (Davis Rodeo Ranch) for 85 points. Tying for eighth place in the round, he did not receive any world points to help in his quest.

After just 4.51 seconds aboard DJ Long John (Blake Sharp/High Voltage Cattle/American Spirits), Vieira came down hard, leaving empty-handed with no added world points.

New York young gun Daylon Swearingen (Piffard, New York) was reserved but continually flashed a smile on the back of the chutes throughout the night before his ride aboard Hurts So Good (Cord McCoy/David Wolfe), which resulted in a second-place finish.

Erupting from the chutes and reminding PBR fans and his fellow competitors alike of his control and athleticism, Swearingen received 89.5 points and, more importantly, eight world points for his ride. He now sits at No. 28 in the world standings.

Adriano Salgado (Batatais, Brazil) rounded out the Top 3 in Round 1. The 23-year-old Brazilian, who sported a freshly shaved PBR logo in his hair, fired up the crowd midway through the night as he bested The Bandit (Cord McCoy/Larry & Kathy Miller) for 88.5 points. Salgado currently sits at No. 4 in the PWVT standings heading into championship Sunday.

Along with a much-needed seven world points, The No. 38 ranked bull rider in the world inched closer to his first World Finals qualification.

Ezekiel Mitchell (Rockdale, Texas), Lane Nobles (West, Texas) and Ednei Caminhas (Indaiatuba, Brazil) split the fourth-place finish with matching 86-point ride scores.

Mitchell, who sits at No. 29 in the world, was paired with Bullet Train (Hart Cattle Co/People’s Cattle). The young Texan, who has had a tumultuous time of late in his riding, clung to his bovine opponent to make the 8.

With PWVT leader Michael Lane (Tazewell, Virginia) out of competition with a broken thumb, Nobles arrived in Las Vegas on a mission to move up from PWVT’s No. 7 standing and clinch one of the event’s four qualifying spots for PBR World Finals. Matched with Dazed & Confused (Aduddell/Owens), the 30-year-old Texan was in complete control.

As the second-oldest rider competing at the PWVT Finals, 46-year-old Caminhas had the crowd on his side as he launched from the chutes to best Heart & Soul (DD Bucking Bulls/Just for Kicks).

All three men collected three world points for their efforts.

Round 1 of the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals also kicked off the American Bucking Bull Inc. (ABBI) Derby and Wild Card Classic competitions.

Rockin T Ranch’s R83 War Department currently leads the Derby competition with 91.6 points, while F42 Big Wave (Almand/Maynes/D&H Cattle) sits second with 89.6 points. 816 Figure 8 (6M Ranch/Rockin T Ranch) is in third place with 88.8 points.

6E Liston (D&H Cattle) has taken a big lead in the Wild Card Classic event with 90.2 points. Second place is more than 1.5 points behind, with Frontier Rodeo’s 93E Border Show posting 88.6 points, while 53E Bayou Bengal (Carr Pro Rodeo) sits third with 88 points.

Sunday’s event will conclude the Derby and Wild Card Classic competitions, with the winner of each advancing to the ABBI Classic World Finals in conjunction with the PBR World Finals on Wednesday, Nov. 3.
