Fun Facts about Trey: Trey is the third generation of the Yates family to compete at the WNFR. His grandfather Dick Yates roped there with his father, J.D. Yates, and J.D.’s sister was a favorite in the barrel racing. J.D. has become known around the world for his horse training and last year, he and Trey roped together at the American Quarter Horse Association World Show. In fact, J.D. won his 45th open world title and Trey won his first. The father-son dream team was carrying on the legacy of family roping together and putting horsemanship first on the priority list. Those values have served Trey well in his pro rodeo career as well. The experiences of past generations gave him an insight into what it takes to be a professional team roper that is paying off with his third WNFR qualification. Trey won the WNFR average the first year he qualified roping behind Aaron Tsinigine. He’s won rodeos with other partners since then, but found his groove with Tyler Wade who he roped in Las Vegas with last year and qualified with this year.
